East Day Spa’s Managing Director Ina Bajaj works the shop floor

After finding myself working the spa floor over Christmas and January, I have a new appreciation of how hard our incredible staff work. For the first week I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown, the pace was so frenetic…

I’m always at the spa, but usually in the office and rarely for ten hour shifts. Doing full shifts has made me realise just how important it is not to lose touch with the shop floor.

Not only has it been a fantastic opportunity to interact with staff and customers, it has provided the perfect opportunity to notice little things that need improving in the spa.

I suddenly realised that some of the music was monotonous so swiftly gave the I-pod a good clean out and update. I also solved the mystery of the disappearing white towels! It turned out they were being mixed up with the white paper towels and accidentally being thrown away.  Such a small thing, but the realisation could save us a small fortune in the long term.

When I first opened East Day Spa Wellington ten years ago I knew practically each and every client that walked out of the lift. Now I’d be lucky to know 20% of the clients at East Day Spa Auckland.

I’m determined to change that, to go back to basics and reconnect on the ground level.  I don’t want to ever lose t touch again and from now on, whether I’m in Auckland, Melbourne or Bali, I intend to work at least one full shift on the shop floor each week.

BLEND BABY BLEND

We’re totally in love with the genius Beauty Blender makeup applicator invented by celebrity makeup artist Rea Ann Silva. The Beauty Blender has won multiple awards for its ability to create a flawless movie-star finish and is being hailed by professionals and at-home beauties around the globe…

The ingenious conical shape ensures perfect coverage – the pointed end is great for blending around your nose while the oval base works wonders on your cheeks and forehead.

Rea Ann Silva’s resume in the entertainment industry lists a virtual “Who’s Who” of Music, Film, TV and red carpet stars. She developed the Beauty Blender during the advent of high definition video, as an alternative to air-brushing the stars.

Rea Ann originally developed the applicator for professionals, but soon realised it could help all women; ‘Application is the biggest hurdle women have.  The Beauty Blender means you can use any makeup and put it on like a pro the very first time.’

The Beauty Blender is now sold around the world. In New Zealand, it is exclusively available at East Day Spa Auckland (the Beauty Blender Pack, which includes cleanser and sponge is $59.00 and the single Beauty Blender is $30.00).

HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR MOLES LATELY?

It’s been a horrendous summer in New Zealand so far but don’t let the lack of rays make you complacent when it comes to skin safety.  You need sunscreen even on dreary old days and ideally you should have your moles checked yearly to avoid deadly melanoma and skin cancers…

Go Fake

Stock up on the fake tan folks, new research suggests it could be saving lives. A study conducted in the US recently revealed that women who use fake tanning products are reducing their exposure to the sun. We recommend and stock That’s So Tan in a Can for a natural, streak-free finish.

Sun Downunder

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, while New Zealand has the highest rate of melanoma (which is the deadliest form of skin cancer).

In New Zealand, more than 2000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in each year and melanomas kill more than a thousand Australians every year.

Mole Checks

A mole check is a quick and effective way to detect dangerous moles. After a fourth member of my family was recently been diagnosed with melanoma, I decided to face my fears and book an appointment with a dermatologist.

As a teen I rarely wore sunscreen and spent hours swimming in the local river, often burning to a dangerous scarlet. In the days leading up my mole check appointment I was a nervous wreck and contemplated cancelling. Ludicrously, I thought I’d rather not know if my skin was harbouring a lethal enemy…

In the end, I plucked up the courage and dragged my other half along for a check too (he was mortified at the prospect of having to reveal a mole in an extremely embarrassing place!)

The experience ended up being quick (20 minutes), painless and not all that embarrassing (even for my shy man).  Using a specialised dermascope, the dermatologist checked out each and every mole on our bodies.  We were both clear, although my partner does have a microscopic dot on his big toe that the dermatologist recommended he keep a close eye on. Almost impossible to see with the naked eye, it really hit home the necessity to have regular checkups with trained professionals who know what they’re looking for.

CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON

For the first time in 12 years, we’re entering the auspicious year of the dragon.  The dragon is a symbol of good fortune, wisdom and intense power…

The dragon holds special significance for the Chinese people. More than 4,000 years ago the two largest tribes in China joined forces and chose the dragon as their emblem. The Han Chinese are still known as the descendents of the dragon.

While the West sees the mythical dragon as being malevolent, the Chinese revere the dragon for being a powerful ruler and symbol of luck.

In Chinese astrology, people born in the dragon year are considered special. They’re supposedly enterprising, brave and self-assured – the free spirits of the zodiac.  Negative traits include a quick temper and vanity.

It’s said the Year of the Dragon is always marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. People are said to respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy and vitality, often throwing all caution in the wind.

If you’re a dragon, expect double the luck this year. Your natural talents will bloom fully.

GIVING THANKS BALI STYLE

One of the most striking things about Bali is the custom of giving offerings. Every day the Balinese place little trays of food and flowers, known as canang sari, outside homes, in temples on shrines, on the pavement and even at dangerous intersections.

The Balinese believe strongly in magic and the power of spirits and they consider the giving of offerings to be a form of spiritual tax that appeases the spirits and brings prosperity and good health to the family.

Balinese Hinduism is  influenced by animism and naturalism and spirits are believed to exist in all objects and all elements of nature.

The Balinese consider the giving of offerings both a duty and an honour. It is a ritual for giving back what has been given to you by the gods. It is about showing gratitude .

There are thousands of different types of offerings ranging from the simple to the highly complex.

Balinese families place offerings on their family shrine every morning before they eat breakfast.  They must be placed on the shrine by a female family member dressed in Balinese dress. She will always carry a stick of burning incense with the offering.

Pabanten are offerings for the gods of very tall, exquisitely arranged pyramids of food, fruit, cakes and flowers. They are carried to the temple by women on their heads as the head is considered the most sacred part of the body..

On special occasions like weddings, figurines of coloured rice dough are made, fried and attached to huge bamboo frames, which represent the universe symbolically.

In large religious ceremonies, up to 500 animals can be sacrificed to the gods. The sacrificed animals are believed to be re-incarnated in forms that are more favourable.

Scientific research has shown that counting your blessings has real health benefits. Grateful people feel more alert, alive, interested, enthusiastic. They also feel more connected to others.Which might explain why the Balinese always seem to have beautiful smiles on their faces.
